No More Myspace or Blogs in the Library?

It could very well happen. Republican Senator Matt Murphy of Illinois is attempting to get a bill passed that would make it illegal for all public and school libraries to allow access to social networking sites like MySpace and blogs.

Read more about it hereand here.

So what do you think? Should MySpace and blogs like this one be available in the library? Or should they be blocked?

I definitely don't have a problem banning access to social networking sites at the library. If we allow social networking at the library, patrons may end up going to the library just to access these sites. This will just defeat the original purpose of a library, which is to be a place for learning and reading.

P.S. Does anyone else read this?

Aren't there different ways to learn? Just a few years ago, there were only books. Then came the Internet and public libraries created websites and offered people electronic databases. Social networking sites are not only avenues to socialize but also to exchange information and "learn." As libraries are there to help people access information, blogs and MySpace will enhance that.

P.S. Keep it up, Griselle. People do read your comments!
